T-Mobile myTouch 3G: Better than the Iphone? by Simon Drew
The T-Mobile myTouch 3G is far superior to the G1, its predecessor. There is no doubt about that since it was basically built up from that platform. The question, and far more important to know, is if it is better than the Iphone. Because this second Android Phone dropped its physical keyboard (QWERTY), the devise are much more similar and thus, the comparison becomes much more relevant.
The Hardware
The two mobile phones look quite similar to each other, and thanks to the previously mentioned dropping of the physical QWERTY keyboard, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G is closer to the level of the Iphone; closer but not better. When placed or held at the same time, the Android phone tends to feel a bit “plasticky,” which more often than not, is associated with being of cheaper quality. But in terms of overall look, it seems that the myTouch 3G is at par with the aesthetic quality of the Iphone.
The 3.2 megapixel camera on the T-Mobile myTouch 3G will be greatly appreciated by those who own the original or Iphone 3G. Its video capture ability will also be appreciated.
CustomizableProbably the biggest argument for the Android phone against the Iphone is its ability to be heavily customized. From its outer shell casing (which initially comes in white, black and merlot but will have to option to be completely customizable) to its menus and icons, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G is priding itself on being able to fully incorporate the personality of the user. This targets the Iphone’s weakness of being totally confined and controlled. And this might just be the biggest argument anyone will have in favor of the myTouch 3G.
Aside from this, the myTouch 3G also has the Sherpa application (which is definitely an attractive feature) as well as the ability to run a third-party application. Couple this with the fact that its battery life has been extended and you have a very formidable foe for the IPhone. In fact, this ability of running third-party applications is something the IPhone is toying with but has not yet commit to (at least as far as the market is concerned).
IPhone-killer
Although the two smartphones are quite similar, the preference of the consumers will play a big part in the decision to either get a T-Mobile myTouch 3G or an Iphone (whether it be the original or the 3G). It will boil down two whether you want the openness of the Android Platform, or whether you want the tightly controlled approach of the Iphone OS. The rest of the differences will seem trivial.
Yes, the myTouch 3G has made up a lot of ground against the Iphone. Some might say it is even better and has successfully become an Iphone-killer. There is one problem though, it may have the ability to kill the original Iphone and even the Iphone 3G but as for the Iphone 3G S, that is another story all together. Most advantages that the mytouch 3G has on the Iphone are completely erased or addressed by the Iphone 3G S. This might mean it’s back to the drawing board for a new Iphone 3G S killer.
